A day at Bed and Breakfast Finca Gordo during the preparations for the new season. We're having breakfast together in the morning sun, Marina is preparing the rooms, and I'm doing some odd jobs. Around noon, a car is honking furiously. Marina Marina Marina opens the door.
Pepe, the goatherd from Riogordo, is standing at the gate in his Renault 4. We open the gate, and the little white car speeds down. It's a pleasant welcome; he's dropping by for a beer and a chat.
Yes, we talk about that too, but recently Pepe asked me to edit and print some photos. I did, and in the photo was a mother goat with six young ones. Pepe thought it was so special and wanted to give each of his children a print. I had to have one too.
When we delivered the photos of the goats, he was so excited and asked what I wanted for them. I didn't want anything for them. I'd love to find a good neighbor.
But today Pepe brought something to make up for it. Inside the little white car was the gift for our Bed and Breakfast: a real turkey weighing over 15 kg. Live, of course, straight from the farm.
"But Pepe, we're from the city," I told him. "We're not just going to slaughter an animal." But Pepe was determined to give us a turkey. "Okay, this looks like a nice tree," I think that's what Pepe meant. I had to help out. The turkey was hung by its legs from the tree, and in no time, the head was off, and the little creature struggled for a while. The skin and feathers were peeled off, the organs removed, and Pepe drove off in his little white car, telling him to let it hang for four hours and let it cool down, then you can cook and debone it.
Still, I continued working on painting etc. and after 4 hours I finished the animal.
Result: 8 beautiful fillets, a pan of soup, turkey rendang and turkey au vin.
